The Vegan Yarn
This project is based on the premise of being a voice for the voiceless. Using top end design and high quality plant-derived yarns to prove that luxury fashion knitwear does not need to be synonymous with the exploitation of animals. Lalla Wandavi has always strived for ethical sourcing and production, but this new full-fashioned collection takes this focus to another level.
In October 2016, in conjunction with her Master's Degree studies at Nottingham Trent University, Maria Laura became more aware of the techniques and methods used in the sourcing of animal fibres. Because of this she resolved to distance herself from this side of the industry, choosing a more ethical path, but with the end result still being the same: High end, sought after knitwear that stands out with its subtlety and its intricate yet minimal designs. In the case of The Vegan Yarn collection, love, freedom and compassion are more than just words.
Having worked for five years on predominantly womenswear projects, Lalla Wandavi has transitioned towards gender-neutral unisex clothing. She began exploring this concept originally in The Kool Dudes (her Master’s Degree collection) with the styles and inspirations evolving into The Vegan Yarn.
The textures and patterns visualised in this collection are inspired by the natural world, specifically by the intricate designs of bird wings and feathers. Jumpers owned by her Italian grandfather also act as an inspiration for this fully-fashioned vegan collection which uses cotton and linen yarns from Italy and bamboo yarns from Canada.
