The Vegan Yarn
This project comes from an intention to be a voice for the voiceless. Lalla Wandavi has been using natural yarns since she started her work in 2008, and has always strived for an ethical concept for sourcing and knitting, as her work has always been bespoke and fully-fashioned knitwear.
In October 2016, in conjunction with her studies, she began some research in how animal fibres are sourced, then resolved to diverge from an industry which still uses practices not always animal-friendly. The Vegan Yarn Project was born in a space of love, freedom and compassion for all beings.
Having worked for five years on projects that were mainly womenswear, Lalla Wandavi transitioned towards creating gender-neutral clothing. She began exploring this concept in The Kool Dudes, her Master’s Degree collection, which also helped inspire The Vegan Yarn.
Her patterns come from her research into fully-fashioned knitted jumpers and include patterns from her grandfather’s jumpers. The yarns are from Italy and Canada, and those used for her first vegan collection are organic cotton, linen and organic bamboo. The textures are inspired by the natural world and animals, and specifically by wings and feathers.
